Understanding Dentures: Types, Benefits, and Care
Types of Dentures
Complete Dentures: These are further classified into “conventional” and “immediate.” Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, typically ready for placement in about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth removal. Immediate dentures, on the other hand, are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.
Partial Dentures: These consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. They fill the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from changing position.
Benefits of Dentures
- Improved Appearance: Dentures are custom-made to closely resemble natural teeth, improving the smile and facial structure.
- Enhanced Chewing and Speaking: They help in better chewing of food and improve clarity in speech, which can be affected by missing teeth.
- Cost-Effective: Compared to other dental restorations like implants, dentures are generally more affordable and accessible.
- Non-Invasive: The process of getting dentures does not require surgery, making it a less invasive option compared to dental implants.
Caring for Your Dentures
Proper care of dentures is essential for maintaining oral health and ensuring the longevity of the appliance.
- Daily Cleaning: Dentures should be cleaned daily using a brush designed for dentures or a soft-bristle toothbrush with a non-abrasive cleanser. This helps remove food particles, plaque, and prevents stains.
- Soaking: When not in use, dentures should be soaked in a denture cleaner solution to keep them moist and retain their shape. Never use hot water as it can warp the dentures.
- Regular Dental Check-Ups: Regular visits to the dentist are crucial for ensuring the dentures fit properly and to check for any signs of damage or oral health issues.
- Handling with Care: When cleaning or handling dentures, do so over a folded towel or basin of water to prevent breakage if they are accidentally dropped.
